Purpose: This study was aimed at evaluating the clinical results after 2 weeks of wearing simultaneous multifocal soft contact lenses (MSCLs) of two designs.
Methods: Fifty eyes of 25 participants aged 51.5¡¾3.6 years were included. Groups A and B wore MSCLs with center?distance, concentric (CDC) and center?near, progressive (CNP) designs, respectively. In particular, participants with a strong will to wear lenses were recruited. The visual acuity (VA) was tested before wearing an MSCL and after 30 min, 1 day, and 2 weeks of wearing an MSCL. Subjective satisfaction for intermediate vision was surveyed.
Results: After 2 weeks, 70% of patients in group A and 100% of those in group B had distance VA of 0.63. Binocular near VA was over 0.63 in both groups after 2 weeks. Distance VA over 0.8 and near VA over 0.63 after MSCL wear accounted for 71% and 82% of groups A and B, respectively. Subjective satisfaction of intermediate vision was at least ¡°satisfied¡± for 80% of group A patients and 100% of group B patients.
Conclusions: Clinically, wearing an MSCL with a CDC or CNP design in presbyopia effectively enhanced VA. However, distance and intermediate vision differed according to the design, so the working environment and motive of wear should be considered in design selection.
